Applications are invited for a consultant paediatrician post, based at Singleton Hospital, Swansea. This is a replacement post due to retirement and the successful applicant will be expected to take over the specialist lead of the Paediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology team.

The Department of Acute & Community Paediatrics is currently delivered from 4 Hospital sites (Singleton and Morriston in Swansea, Princess of Wales in Bridgend, and Neath Port Talbot ) plus other community facilities. Cover of in-patients , including when on-call, is divided with 2 separate Consultant teams being responsible for Bridgend and the Swansea sites. There are currently in-patient units at both Singleton and Morriston Hospitals, both of which are covered on-call, but it is expected that there will be centralisation of in-patients at Morriston in the foreseeable future as part of plans to reshape health care in Swansea. There are 46 children’s beds, including a Paediatric Admissions Unit and a 3-bedded High Dependency Unit in Singleton and an additional 22 children’s beds (including 4 High Dependency Unit beds (funded for the regional Cleft Palate service) at Morriston, which contains the Wales Burns & Plastic Unit, the major trauma centre, and the Department for Neurosciences.

The neonatal service is staffed separately by 5 consultant neonatologists and the new appointments will not be expected to participate routinely in the neonatal intensive care service, except if providing a specialist diabetic/ endocrine opinion.

There are 9 hospital based and four community based consultant paediatricians. In addition, most of the neonatologists have some commitment to general paediatrics. The current medical staff shares management of acute emergency paediatrics. Individuals provide a lead in paediatric neurology, gastroenterology, diabetes and endocrinology, respiratory medicine and cystic fibrosis, high dependency care, nephrology and non-invasive cardiology. Many of these specialised services are involved in informal network arrangements across South Wales. There are plans to develop shared care of oncology patients in Swansea with the regional service in Cardiff. Eight consultants (including the holder of this post) participate in a dedicated Admissions Week rota and a 1:8 on-call rota.

The department is responsible for the management of approximately 8000 emergency admissions per year and over 10,000 outpatient consultations.
